“Don’t ever be homeless”
That’s the first thing Clifton said to me when I asked him for a piece of advice. We were both sitting on the low wall that runs in a semi-circle around the gold statue that marks the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park.
I had been building up the courage to do something that comes so easily to me when traveling, but that I hit a mental block with at home, start a conversation with a stranger. I‘m doing a project throughout my travels where I gather pieces of advice from people in each place I visit. Which brings me back to Clifton. I figured if I was going to do this abroad, better start with a bit of advice from home. “Don’t ever be homeless” Clifton said half jokingly. After a bit of a pause he added, “Keep your head above water and stay focused. keep your eye on the prize.”
